Avoid the chance of getting hypothermia by dressing appropriately. Function, not fashion, should dictate your choices. Neoprene is a good choice, be it in the form of a wetsuit or a shirt and pants. Layering is also recommended; but stay away from 100% cotton (yes; that means jeans, as well as sweaters) because it holds water and will cool you down. This increases chances for hypothermia. We offer options in neoprene wear and we are always happy to help you find what works best for your needs.
Always wear your life vest. No exceptions; wear it. It could be a lifesaver, literally.
Another consideration is the addition of a neoprene skirt. Seals brand offers options to fit virtually any kayak, sealing your cockpit from water splashing in and helping to keep your body heat contained. The skirt also keeps water out in the event you and your kayak roll!
Proper clothing is a must for fall canoeing, too. The same rules apply as for kayaking: neoprene is a great choice and always wear your life vest!
Alcohol has no place in the kayak or canoe. Save the drinking for after your paddle. Do, however, consider keeping a thermos of warm beverage handy. Should you or a companion become chilled, drinking something warm will help raise your body temperature.
Keeping in mind a few safety considerations and proper clothing, fall paddling is truly special. Get out and enjoy this beautiful season!
