Black Walnut Trail: January 12, 2003

Black Walnut Trail on Conewango Creek

Light, fluffy, wonderful snow fell for 3 days. When the weekend came, we decided to go snowshoeing on a trail that we had paddled by. In North Warren, PA, the Black Walnut Trail is a flat, easy trek along Conewango Creek. Avoid the commercial part that runs along Route 62. Turn east off Route 62 at Big Joe's Stand, and you will see the trail on the right. Once you pass a few houses, the trail is pleasant and relaxing. Conewango Creek is your constant companion. There are benches along the way if you would like to stop for a moment.

This trail is not a loop, but I didn't mind reaching the end and backtracking. I enjoyed seeing and hearing the moving water. The creek was flowing well, and there were icebergs floating by at times. The 60-minute round trip was about as close to a river as I can get on these 20-degree, snowy days. The next time that I pass this way, I look forward to seeing the trail with paddle in hand again.
